Jamal Shah

CURATOR

A Pakistani actor, executive, painter, social worker, script writer, singer and a song writer who hails from a Pashtun family in Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan. He is the beneficiary of numerous awards including Gold Medal at the fifth Asian Art Biennale in Dhaka. His work is a piece of the changeless accumulations of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and Fukouka Museum, Japan. He has undertaken various significant authorized projects in Pakistan and abroad.

An artist and curator living and working in Karachi. He received a BA in Art History and Economics from Yale University, USA in 1987 and won the Conger B. Goodyear Fine Arts Award for his senior thesis on Mughal gardens. He works primarily in sculpture, installation and performance. He has curated numerous group exhibitions at his eponymous noncommercial gallery in Karachi and elsewhere and was Chief Curator of the inaugural Karachi Biennale in 2017.

Born in Mirpurkhas, Sindh in 1969. He obtained a BFA in Sculpture from NCA Lahore in 1996. He held his first solo show in Karachi in 2000 and completed a three-month residency at the ‘Bag Factory’ in Johannesburg in 2001. The following year, he was awarded a National Excellence Award in Sculpture by the PNCA. He taught at the Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture for over a decade.

Rabbiya Ilyas

VISUAL ARTIST

A contemporary visual artist who lives and works in Lahore. She graduated from the College of Art and Design, University of the Punjab, Lahore 2018 with a major in Painting. Most recently, her work has been exhibited at the World Bank Pakistan, O Art Space, ArtScene Gallery, and Taseer Art Gallery. Her current body of explores the hypocrisies prevalent in religious clergy – focusing on the dichotomies between outward divinity and inner impurity.

Fasiullah Ahsan

MINIATURE PAINTER

Born in 1968. He graduated with a BFA in Miniature Painting from NCA, Lahore in 1994, and his first solo exhibition was in the same city in 1996. He went on to showcase his work extensively in both solo and group shows, winning accolades across Pakistan. He has served as a lecturer at his alma mater. His work is held in several private collections, and he currently lives and works in New York.

Mushtaq Hunzaie graduated from NCA, Rawalpindi with a BFA in Sculpture, with a minor in Drawing and Painting. Hunzaie’s creative philosophy focuses on merging the contemporary and traditional aesthetics of sculpture and painting to produce art that evokes deep emotions. He has taught art at Hunzais Maan Art Studio in Islamabad, and is currently a lecturer at the Karachi School of Art.

He trained as a painter at NCA Lahore and the Massachusetts College of Fine Arts in Boston, USA. He is head of the Fine Arts department BNU Lahore. His first solo international exhibition abroad was in Delhi in 2004, and since then his work has been exhibited extensively world wide. He works with media – including abstractions on canvas, video, photography, mosaic, and sculpture.

Ali Kazim

ARTIST

He received his BFA from NCA Lahore in 2002, and an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art, London in 2011. He is the recipient of a number of awards and artist residencies. His work is in collections of major museums around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Victoria & Albert Museum, Queensland Art Gallery, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, and others.

Nadir Ali Jamali

MINIATURE PAINTER

He studied sculpture at NCA Lahore, and has been teaching at the Institute of Art and Design, University of Sindh in Jamshoro since 2009. Jamali’s work has been displayed in solo exhibitions in Islamabad, Lahore, Larkana, Karachi and Hyderabad. Though he has experimented with a variety of media and styles, including miniature painting, Jamali’s preferred medium remains wood.

He hails from Gumbat area of Kohat District, Khyber Pashtunkhwa. He is based in Islamabad. In 2003 he took Kathak lessons from Ms. Saima Khushnood at E-7, Islamabad. In 2008, Asfandyar learnt elementary Kathak from Guru Indu Mitha. Later he started learning Bharatnatiyam from Indu Mitha. Asfandyar also teaches dance. Currently he teaches dance at Peshawar, University Town.

A Curator of the Asian and Porcelain collection at the Department of Art Objects at Le Louvre Museum (Paris), and has been active in the field of arts for the last twelve years. He has a vast knowledge of Asiatic art and culture of the 18th and 19th century, with a particular focus on Mughal Art. He is a pioneer in the knowledge of pop culture, which is combination of industrial creativity & internet.

Georges Lefeuvre

ANTHROPOLOGIST

French anthropologist and a specialist of Kalash culture. He has spent 48 years of his life doing research in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia. He started his career in 1971 at University of Haute Bretagne and visited Kalash Valley for the first time as a researcher. He started learning the local language of Kalash to better understand its culture, history, religion, traditions etc.

A self-taught contemporary artist from Pakistan, born in 1972 in Karachi. She works in multiple forms of art from painting, new media, drawing, to video art and photography. She works within several disciplines, varying from photography to abstract art, from film to mixed media. Each project is based on the in-depth exploration of one idea, executed with meticulous precision.

Karim Khan Saka

WRITER / SINGER

He is a writer, painter, singer and historian. He is fluent in a number of local and foreign languages, including English, Persian, French, Urdu, Wakhi, Burushaski, Shina, Balti and Khowar. He has published extensively on different local languages from the Gilgit-Baltistan region, and has a vital role in bringing these local languages to written form.

A background in breakdance, but is now developing a mixed form of dance around the skills and energies of breaking, but with marked sensitivity of contemporary dance. He participated in a project supervised by Cie Chriki’Z and choreographed by Jeanne Azoulay. He joined formation Rêvolution for 2 years of intensive training based on the mixture of hip-hop and academic dances.

He has his own style and identity as a dancer. From 2012 to 2014, Maxim performed at the professional hip-hop school Revolution (Anthony Egéa), where he learned how to mix ballet and contemporary dance with hip-hop. He joined Stylistik Company, where he worked with choreographer Abdou N’Gom. He also worked with a number of prominent choreographers and dance companies. 

He has specialized in b-boying style of dance for 14 years. In 2014, he won the French RedBull BC One, followed by several international crew competitions. With this came real fame, and the opportunity to travel and discover hip-hip around the world. He has spent two years working on a new pedagogy aimed at using all tools of hip-hop dance for the service of free body language.

Ali Jeanne Azoulay

DANCER / CHOREOGRAPHER

Jeanne Azoulay’s style of dance is both percussive and instinctive, and combines many aesthetics to form a distinct hybrid form of hip-hop. A self-taught dancer and choreographer. In 2016, she joined the play ‘Du Chaos Born the Stars’, a production of Montpellier Danse 2016. She also collaborated with Milène Duhameau for ‘Creation’ in 2017.
